dingy rooms
windows covered in plastic soak the room in beige
i was so excited to be so far from the ground
the cruel irony of light coming in from a window you can’t even see out of
building america
the acrid chemical stench of paint and spray insulation
chronic sinus congestion from the sheetrock dust
the smell sticks to me like a bandage
i catch whiffs of it in my car
a building you won’t be able to smoke in built on cigarette butts and tobacco spit
building america
down the hallway an open door
an uncovered window
country mice slinking through the doorway to catch a glimpse of the city skyline
they run back into the piles of scrap sheet metal
the expansive concrete ocean filled with bricks and broken glass
gray
the smoke hangs visible in the air
so thick you’d have to cut it with a band saw
